Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Sri Lanka wasn’t just a diplomatic stopover—it was a pivotal moment that strengthened New Delhi-Colombo ties like never before. In a landmark move, both countries signed 10 key agreements, ranging from defense and energy to digital transformation and healthcare.

🔐 1. Landmark Defence Pact

After decades of cautious engagement post-IPKF, India and Sri Lanka finally inked their first formal defense cooperation agreement. This MoU sets the foundation for joint military exercises, training programs, and regular high-level defense dialogue.
PM Modi made it clear: “The security of both our countries is interconnected.” President Dissanayake assured India that Sri Lanka’s soil won’t be used in ways that could harm India’s interests.


⚡ 2. Grid Interconnectivity Agreement

Energy security got a major push as both sides signed a deal to connect their power grids. This will allow electricity trade between the two nations and potentially enable Sri Lanka to export power in the future.

Sri Lanka’s economic crisis is still fresh. India stepped in with agreements to support debt restructuring, helping Colombo stabilize its finances and engage with global lenders.


💊 7. Health Sector Collaboration

India and Sri Lanka signed an MoU to work together in the field of health and medicine. Expect cooperation in pharma, disease prevention, and public health management.


🧪 8. Pharmacopoeia Cooperation

To ensure drug quality and regulatory sync, India’s Pharmacopoeia Commission partnered with Sri Lanka’s National Medicines Regulatory Authority. This MoU promotes cooperation in standards, testing, and best practices.


🌞 9. Solar Rooftops for Religious Sites

India committed $17 million in credit to install solar rooftop systems at 5,000 religious institutions across Sri Lanka. Temples, churches, mosques, and viharas will all benefit—collectively generating around 25 MW of clean energy.


🧭 10. Support Package for Eastern Province

Modi also announced a development package worth 2.4 billion Sri Lankan rupees for the country’s Eastern Province, focusing on socio-economic upliftment, infrastructure, and education.
