Fact Check: SpaceX Rocket Explosion Falsely Linked to Failed Indian Mission

In June 2024, misleading Chinese social media posts circulated, splicing dramatic footage of an exploding SpaceX rocket with clips of Indian space agency workers monitoring a 2021 mission. The posts mocked India’s alleged failure, claiming that “India’s rocket exploded on the spot and more than a billion dollars were lost” due to backward propulsion installation.

However, a closer examination reveals that the video actually depicts a failed SpaceX rocket launch from 2016. Here are the key points:

  1. The Misleading Claims:
    • The simplified Chinese Weibo caption falsely attributed the explosion to India’s rocket.
    • Social media users questioned India’s engineering competence, assuming the footage was genuine.
  2. The Reality:
    • The video shows masked Indian space agency workers followed by a rocket explosion.
    • India had successfully landed a craft near the moon’s south pole months prior, demonstrating frugal space engineering.
    • The explosion clip is from SpaceX’s 2016 incident, not India’s mission.
  3. The Original Video:
    • A reverse image search led to the original video titled “SpaceX – Static Fire Anomaly – AMOS-6.”
    • It was published on the YouTube channel “US Launch Report” on September 2, 2016.
    • US Launch Report is run by disabled veterans and filmed the incident more than two miles away in Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.
  4. Comparison:
    • A screenshot comparison shows the false Weibo post (left) and the Actual clip (right).

The live-streamed video shows the launch of India’s GSLV-F10 mission from the country’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre. The rocket suffered a “catastrophic failure” according to the website Space.com. ISRO’s report on the mission said an “anomaly in the Cryogenic Upper Stage led to the mission abort”

  1. The Actual Incident:
    • On September 1, 2016, an unmanned SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket exploded during a test in Florida.
    • The explosion destroyed the Amos-6 satellite, which Facebook planned to use for high-speed internet in Africa.

In summary, the video does not depict India’s rocket failure but rather an unrelated SpaceX incident. It’s essential to verify information before sharing it online.

Misinformation refers to false or inaccurate information that is spread, often unintentionally, through various channels such as social media, news outlets, or word of mouth. It can mislead people and impact their understanding of events, issues, or facts. Fact-checking and critical thinking are essential to combat misinformation.

  2. Check Original Sources: When you encounter information on social media, verify it by checking the original source. Look for reputable news organizations or official statements.
  3. Read Beyond Headlines: Don’t stop at headlines; read the full article to understand context and nuances. Misinformation often thrives in catchy headlines.
  4. Fact-Check and Debunk: If you encounter misinformation, fact-check it using reliable sources. Debunking involves correcting false information with detailed explanations and facts.
  5. Prebunking: Prebunking is proactively debunking misinformation. Warn your audience about potential falsehoods and provide accurate information before they encounter the misinformation.
  6. Boost News Literacy: Educate yourself and others about news literacy. Understand how information spreads and critically evaluate sources.
  7. Be Skeptical: Approach information with a healthy dose of skepticism. Ask questions, verify claims, and be cautious about sensational content.
