In a devastating turn of events, a helicopter carrying pilgrims crashed near the sacred town of Kedarnath on Sunday morning, killing all seven people on board. Among the deceased were a two-year-old child, five adult passengers, and the pilot, according to officials from India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The aircraft — a Bell 407 (VT-BKA) operated by Aryan Aviation — was on a routine flight from Kedarnath to Guptkashi, two key destinations along the Char Dham Yatra, a revered pilgrimage route in the Indian Himalayas. The flight took off around 5:15 a.m. IST but lost contact shortly afterward.

Local authorities were alerted around 5:00 a.m. that the helicopter was untraceable. It was later confirmed to have crashed near Gaurikund, a densely forested and high-altitude area that has seen unpredictable weather conditions and limited visibility in recent days.
A swift response by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, and rescue teams led to the recovery of all seven bodies. Officials said the crash site was difficult to reach and rescue efforts were hampered by rugged terrain.

The identities of the victims have not been publicly disclosed pending family notifications. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has launched a full-scale investigation into the crash. Preliminary inquiries suggest the possibility of technical malfunction or weather-related disorientation, but no official cause has been determined.
In an emotional post on X (formerly Twitter), Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his sorrow and called it a “very sad news.” He ordered an immediate halt to all helicopter services on the Char Dham route until safety reviews are conducted.
“The negligence at whatever level has been committed will be identified, and punitive action will be ensured,” said Dhami.

This incident is the third aviation mishap along the Char Dham route in just six weeks — including three emergency landings and two crashes. Officials and aviation experts are now raising urgent questions about the competency of flight operators, pilot experience in mountainous terrain, and oversight by regulatory bodies.
The Chief Minister has instructed a review of all pilot credentials, especially those flying in high-altitude Himalayan regions. He also announced the creation of a common command and coordination center in Dehradun to improve communication between aviation services and state agencies.
A new, stricter Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for helicopter pilgrimages will be implemented, aiming to ensure safer, better-coordinated air operations.
