Claim:
A viral video shows people scrambling for free bread at a bakery in Ogun, Nigeria, causing the roof to collapse.
Fact:
The video in question actually depicts an incident in Ballari, Karnataka, India, during a Muharram procession in July 2024. It has been miscaptioned and falsely linked to Nigeria.
Evidence:
- Geolocation and Verification: Factcheck India conducted an investigation, pinpointing the exact location of the incident to a scrap yard in Ballari, Karnataka, using satellite imagery and online videos of the aftermath.
- Social Media Research: Many Social media posts confirmed that the roof of a tin shed collapsed under the weight of spectators watching a Muharram procession, an annual religious event observed by Muslims.
3. Timeline Discrepancy: The viral claim alleges the incident occurred in Nigeria in February 2025. However, video footage and reports confirm that it actually took place in India in July 2024.
Verdict: Misleading
The video has been falsely described as a scene of hunger-driven chaos in Nigeria. It actually shows a tragic incident in India related to a religious procession.
