The murder of Indore resident Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya has shocked the nation. What began as a missing person case soon turned into a chilling murder plot allegedly orchestrated by none other than his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi. Here’s a breakdown of what has emerged so far.

What Happened?

May 11, 2025: Raja and Sonam get married in Indore.
May 23: The couple checks out of a homestay in Nongriat village, Meghalaya—and disappears.
June 2: Raja’s body is found in a gorge. A blood-stained machete is recovered nearby.
June 9: Sonam is arrested from a dhaba in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh.

Who Are the Key Accused?

Sonam Raghuvanshi: The wife and alleged mastermind.
Raj Khushwaha: Alleged boyfriend of Sonam; claims he wanted to back out of the murder plot.
Three contract killers: Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi.

All four men have been arrested by police. Sonam was detained from UP and brought into custody.

What the Police Say

During interrogation, Raj Khushwaha reportedly told police that Sonam remained determined to kill her husband even when the killers hesitated.
He claimed the group initially backed out, but Sonam lured them with an offer of ₹15 lakh to carry out the murder.
Police sources say ₹20 lakh was later paid to the killers.
Sonam allegedly used ₹15,000 from Raja’s wallet as an advance to the assailants.
After the murder, she reportedly returned to Indore and stayed in a rented flat from May 25 to 27, evading police.

What Did the Autopsy Reveal?

Raja was hit twice on the head with a sharp object.
The recovered weapon — a machete (dao) — is believed to have been used in the attack.
A raincoat possibly belonging to the couple was also found near the crime site in Mawkma village.

Sonam’s Defense

In custody, Sonam claims she was drugged and does not remember how she ended up in Ghazipur. She has denied being the mastermind and said she is a victim, not an accused. However, her movements and communications post-murder are under police scrutiny.

Why This Case Matters

The case highlights the dark side of relationship-based crime — a newlywed wife allegedly plotting her husband’s murder.
Raises concerns over premeditated use of contract killings by civilians.
Showcases the complexity of cross-state investigations: from Indore to Meghalaya to Uttar Pradesh.

What’s Next?

The police are verifying financial transactions, mobile location data, and testimonies.
Investigators are also working to corroborate Raj Khushwaha’s claims and track digital trails.
Sonam may undergo psychological evaluation as part of the investigation.
