Claim: Viral news reports and social media posts claim that two-wheelers will be charged toll tax on national highways starting July 15, 2025.
Verdict: False | No such decision has been taken
What’s Going Viral?
Several media outlets and social media influencers have recently shared reports claiming that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning to levy toll tax on two-wheelers starting July 15. The claim triggered confusion among commuters, especially in rural and semi-urban areas where bikes are a primary mode of transport.
Official Clarification by Government
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari swiftly debunked these viral claims. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:
“Some media houses are spreading misleading news about imposing a toll tax on two-wheelers. No such decision is proposed. Complete exemption on toll for two-wheelers will continue.”
Gadkari further emphasized that road tax is already collected from two-wheeler owners at the time of purchase, which justifies their continued exemption from toll payments on national highways.
NHAI’s Official Statement
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) also issued a public clarification stating that:
- There is no proposal under consideration to levy toll on two-wheelers.
- Viral reports suggesting toll collection from July 15 are baseless and misleading.
- Citizens are advised to verify such claims through official government sources before believing or sharing them.
What’s Actually Changing?
While two-wheeler toll rumors are fake, the government is working on new toll reforms for other vehicles:
FASTag-Based Annual Pass Coming Soon
- Starting August 15, 2025, the government plans to introduce a FASTag-based Annual Pass.
- It will allow unlimited travel across 200 toll plazas on National Highways for just ₹3,000 per year.
- This is expected to cut toll expenses by up to 70%, benefiting daily commuters and transporters.
Final Word
Don’t fall for fake news. Two-wheelers remain exempt from toll on national highways. No new rule or proposal has been announced by NHAI or the Ministry of Road Transport regarding toll for bikes or scooters. Always verify from government channels before trusting viral content.
