Claim
A viral email claims to be from the Income Tax Department, warning users about “compliance gaps” in their return filings and urging them to take immediate action.
Fact Check Verdict: Fake (Phishing Scam)
What’s the story?
A suspicious email is circulating widely, pretending to be from the Income Tax Department.
- It claims there are issues in your ITR filings
- Urges urgent action to avoid penalties
- Often includes links or attachments
The warning was flagged by Press Information Bureau through its fact-check unit.
What Factcheck India Found?
This is a phishing attempt
- The email is not officially issued by the government
- It is designed to steal sensitive data like PAN, bank details, or login credentials
- Clicking links may lead to fake websites mimicking official portals
What the government says
- The Income Tax Department has NOT sent such emails
- Citizens are advised to ignore and report such messages
Red flags to watch
- Generic greetings (e.g., “Dear taxpayer”)
- Urgent threats like penalties or account blocking
- Suspicious links not ending in “.gov.in”
- Requests for OTPs, passwords, or financial details
Safety tips
- ✔ Always verify emails via the official portal: incometax.gov.in
- ✔ Do not click unknown links or download attachments
- ✔ Report phishing emails to official authorities
- ✔ Enable 2-factor authentication for safety
Conclusion
This viral email is not from the government—it is a scam designed to steal your data and money. Stay alert, verify sources, and never share sensitive information through suspicious emails.
