Fact Check: Did Narendra Modi Debunk Reports Claiming India Planned A Foreign Travel Tax?

Claim

A media report claimed that the Indian government was considering imposing a new tax or cess on foreign travel amid rising economic pressure caused by the West Asia conflict and increasing fuel prices.

Verdict

Yes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly rejected the claim. The report was later withdrawn by CNBC-TV18. The media organisation admitted the story was inaccurate and issued a public correction.

What Was Reported?

The now-withdrawn report claimed:

The government was considering a foreign travel tax or surcharge
The proposal was linked to economic strain caused by the West Asia crisis
The measure could be temporary and aimed at managing rising import and fuel costs

The story cited unnamed sources and suggested the levy would directly benefit the central government.

PM Modi’s Response

In a rare public intervention, Narendra Modi personally responded on X, strongly denying the report.

He wrote:

“This is totally false. Not an iota of truth in this.”

The Prime Minister further clarified:

“There is no question of putting such restrictions on foreign travel.”

He also reiterated the government’s commitment to:

Ease of Doing Business
Ease of Living

This is totally false.

Not an iota of truth in this.

There is no question of putting such restrictions on foreign travel.

We remain committed to improving ‘Ease of Doing Business’ and ‘Ease of Living’ for our people. https://t.co/9lxjbxz0nV

The direct response quickly drew national attention because sitting prime ministers rarely personally fact-check media reports on social media.

What Happened Next?

Following the Prime Minister’s clarification, CNBC-TV18 deleted the original report and issued a correction.

The channel stated:

“Our story on government considering tax/cess on foreign travel is not accurate. We withdraw the story and regret the error.”

This effectively confirmed that the earlier report was incorrect.

Why Did The Rumour Gain Attention?

The claim spread rapidly because:

Fuel prices had recently increased
The government had urged people to reduce non-essential expenses
Global energy prices were rising due to the US-Iran conflict

These economic pressures made the rumour appear believable to many social media users.

What Is The Current Situation?

At present:

There is no official proposal for a foreign travel tax
No restriction on international travel has been announced
The government has not introduced any new foreign travel cess

The viral reports suggesting otherwise have been officially denied.

Conclusion

The claim that the Indian government was planning to impose a foreign travel tax is false. Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly denied the report. CNBC-TV18 withdrew the story and admitted it was inaccurate No such tax proposal has been officially announced
