CJP plans fresh Delhi protest after arrests of key organisers

Claim:
Social media posts and several reports claimed that the passports of people involved in the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests in Delhi would be cancelled following the July 20 clashes with police.

Verdict: False. Delhi Police has officially denied making any decision to cancel the passports of CJP protesters, calling the viral claim “misleading.”

What is the viral claim?

Following the violent clashes between Delhi Police and supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) during the “Chalo Sansad” march on July 20, posts circulated online claiming authorities had decided to revoke the passports of protesters identified as participating in the violence. Several reports suggested police were identifying protesters through CCTV footage, mobile videos and other digital evidence and would begin the process of passport cancellation under applicable laws. The claim quickly spread across social media, raising concerns among students and activists participating in the protests.

What did Delhi Police say?

Delhi Police has categorically denied the claim.

In a post on X, the New Delhi District Police said:

“The viral claim is misleading. No such decision has been announced to cancel the passports of CJP protestors.“

The police also urged people not to share misleading information and advised citizens to rely only on official announcements.

This means no official order has been issued directing cancellation of passports of CJP protesters.

Why did the rumour spread?

The confusion appears to have arisen because reports mentioned that investigators were:

analysing CCTV footage,
examining video recordings,
collecting digital evidence, and
identifying individuals allegedly involved in violence.

Some reports went a step further by speculating that passport cancellation could be initiated under legal provisions.

However, Delhi Police clarified that no such decision has been announced, making the viral claim inaccurate.

What happened during the July 20 protest?

The controversy stems from the massive CJP protest organised under the “Chalo Sansad” campaign.

Thousands of students and supporters marched towards Parliament demanding:

the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan,
accountability for alleged NEET examination irregularities,
broader education reforms.

Violent clashes broke out after police stopped protesters from moving towards Parliament.

According to police:

tear gas was fired,
baton charges were carried out,
protesters allegedly violated prohibitory orders.

The CJP, however, accused police of excessive force and brutality.

What is the latest development?

After several days of protests:

representatives of the CJP and Union ministers are scheduled to hold talks at the Constitution Club.
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28, ended his fast after the Centre gave assurances regarding discussions on education reforms and consideration of compensation for families affected by the NEET controversy.

The government also indicated it was positive about not pursuing cases against those who protested peacefully.

Fact Check Conclusion

The claim that Delhi Police has decided to cancel the passports of CJP protesters is false. Delhi Police has officially stated that no such decision has been announced and has advised the public not to believe or circulate misleading posts. While investigations into the July 20 violence continue, there is currently no official order directing passport cancellation for CJP protesters.
