Fact Check: Is Telegram Banned in India? Viral Claim Lacks Full Context

Claim

Several social media posts are claiming that messaging platform Telegram has been banned in India by the government.

Verdict

The claim is misleading.

What Is Being Claimed?

Posts circulating across social media platforms suggest that Telegram has been completely banned in India. The claim gained traction after users reported difficulties accessing the platform and shared screenshots alleging that the government had prohibited its use nationwide. The viral posts, however, fail to provide the full context behind the government’s action.

FactCheck India Investigation

To verify the claim, FactCheck India reviewed reports and official statements related to the restriction on Telegram. Our investigation found that the government has not announced a permanent ban on Telegram. Instead, authorities ordered a temporary and time-bound restriction on access to the platform following concerns about its alleged misuse by cheating networks during the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination process. According to official information released by the National Testing Agency, the restriction was implemented under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The order limits access to Telegram in India until June 22, 2026, covering the examination period and its immediate aftermath.

Why Was Telegram Restricted?

The NTA stated that certain groups had allegedly been using Telegram channels and features to circulate misleading information and create false narratives related to examination paper leaks. Authorities said the temporary measure was intended to prevent organized attempts to mislead candidates and undermine the integrity of national examinations. In addition to restricting access to the platform for a limited period, the government also directed Telegram to disable the message-editing feature in India until June 30, 2026. According to the NTA, the editing function had allegedly been used in the past to modify previously posted messages and falsely present them as evidence of examination paper leaks after tests had already been conducted.

What Happens After June 22?

The NTA’s notification makes it clear that the access restriction is temporary and expires on June 22, 2026. The separate direction regarding Telegram’s message-editing feature remains effective until June 30, 2026. However, this restriction does not prevent users from sending or receiving new messages on the platform once normal access is restored. Therefore, reports suggesting that Telegram has been permanently banned in India are inaccurate.

Conclusion

The government imposed a temporary restriction on the platform until June 22, 2026, based on recommendations from the National Testing Agency related to the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination.
